Awesome Comics Getting Awesome(?) Adaptations

This past Christmas I was interested in collecting trades of two comic series that I had heard a lot of great things about. Ultimately I only got my hands on one of the series, which happily lived up to my expectations.  It’s likely that I’ll pick up the other series someday, but it hasn’t happened yet.

Lumberjanes by Shannon Walters, Grace Ellis, Brooke A Allen and Noelle Stevenson is the book that I haven’t yet actually read, but it has continued to generate just about universal praise. The series centres around a summer camp for girls which is plagued by mysterious and supernatural events.  Plans for a film adaptation of the comic were announced some time ago, but just recently Io9 announced that the project has found a director, Emily Carmichael.  The young director’s short films have been widely praised, and she had been mentioned as a possible helmer for a Captain Marvel movie.

Io9 has also recently announced some news about an adaptation of the series that I actually did get my hands on, Runaways by Brian K. Vaughan. Vaughan was a writer for Lost, but he is best known for his work in Graphic Novels.  Many of his stories take place in completely new worlds, and while Runaways takes place in the Marvel Universe, there are only occasional appearances by recognizable characters.  The series follows of a group of teens who discover that their parents are super villains, and go on the run.

The new announcement about the Runaways adaptation is that Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage put together a TV show of the comic series for Hulu.  Schwartz and Savage are known for creating the CW series Gossip Girl, which was also an adaption.

Now, I love Runaways, and it would have definitely been on my Top Ten list of works that needed to be adapted to film or television. But this news is a little frustrating for me because it is not clear if I will have any access to this show.  Presumably there will be DVDS/Blu-ray’s of it at least but seriously, why not do this show on Freeform?  The network is already doing a show on the Marvel characters Cloak and Dagger, who actually show up in Runaways, and Schwartz and Savage are doing an American version of the British show Misfits for Freeform so seriously, why is the Runaways show not going to Freeform as well?
